What is the College Paid Summer Staff Program?

The Summer Staff Program is for graduating high school seniors through just graduated college students who are interested in applying to be a member of the Camp Awana staff during the summer 2017 camping season. Each staff member will gain valuable experience, grow and be challenged in their faith and be able to supplement their summer income. Each applicant must be 18 years old before they serve in this position.

What will a Summer Staff member be doing at Camp Awana?

Summer Staff members will serve in various aspects of the camp ministry, consistent with personal capabilities and camp staffing needs.  This might include serving as a camp counselor/cabin leader, assisting in camper activities, working on the waterfront, helping in the dining hall or canteen, helping to lead worship, assisting in facilities and grounds maintenance, or administration. Please keep in mind that as needs may change, staff members will need to be flexible to change in order to best serve our campers.

We will make sure that summer staff members get the time they need to do laundry and refresh themselves while serving at Camp Awana. The goal is to give each College Summer Staff Member a full 24 hour period off each week, but that is not always possible due to circumstances. Each member will receive at least 24 hours off every two weeks.

How much money can a Summer Staff Member earn?

Each staff member will receive at a minimum $210/week plus room and board. Each staff member is asked to raise financial contributions for the Summer Staff Fund equivalent to at least $210 per week times the number of weeks that the staff member is committing to working at Camp. Summer Staff members are required to work a minimum of 4 weeks this summer, including the 2 weeks of their own gender camp. If excess money is raised, a Summer Staff member can receive up to $250/week maximum. Staff members will receive a check every two weeks.

In order to be a part of the summer staff, participants must raise at least 50% of their summer earnings by June 11, 2017. For example, if you are committing to 5 weeks on staff, that would equal receiving $1050 minimum for the summer. $525 would need to be raised by June 11, 2017.

A receipt will be issued by Camp Awana to donors for contributions made to this fund. You will be requested to also send a thank you note to everyone who contributes to the Summer Staff fund on your behalf.  If, for any reason, you do not complete your term of service, the balance of all funds raised will remain part of the Summer Staff fund. Federal and/or state income taxes may have to be paid on the amount received depending upon individual circumstances.

How do I Apply for the Summer Staff program?

All applicants who submit an online application will be considered, but not guaranteed acceptance into the Summer Staff program.

1. At a minimum, be available for 2 weeks of your gendered camp (two weeks for girls camp or two weeks for boys camp), and 4 weeks overall, to serve in whatever capacity needed.

2017 summer camp dates that are applicable for College Summer Staff Members:

Guest Group = June 5-9
Guest Group = June 10-17
Guest Group = June 19-23
Solid Rock Co-Ed HS = June 25-July 1
Family Camp = July 2-8
Girls Camp = July 9-22 (2 Weeks)
Boys Camp = July 23-August 5 (2 Weeks)

2. Complete the College Paid Summer Staff Application Online by April 1, 2017..

3. Be available for training on April 29th at the North Side Gospel Center, 3859 N. Central Ave., Chicago or Do Online Training.

Applications will be reviewed and screened as they are received by the Latham Christian Camping Personnel Team. We expect to be able to respond to applicants within 7-10 days after completion of application. The sooner you get your applications in the sooner you can start on fund raising. What happens if i am accepted into the College Paid Summer Staff program?

What Camp Awana will do:

*An acceptance email will be sent to you.
*A set of 50 (or more) brochures about the summer staff program will be sent to you.
*A periodic report of how much you have raised will be sent to you via email

What you need to do:

*Follow instructions in the acceptance email.
*You will need to mail/hand out the brochures and letters ASAP to at least 35-50 people
*You will want to make follow up phone calls to people you sent letters to who haven’t sent in funds yet.
